Famosa Chicken Rice Ball

After finishing up the bowl of prawn mee, Demona 's tummy was still growling and I decided to try the famous Melaka Chicken Rice Ball. You know, so much has been said about the hand rolled chicken rice ball from Melaka and you just gotta tried them when you are in town.

Seeing the long long queue of the famous Chung Wah Restaurant Chicken Rice Ball, we decided to try the more touristy yet less crowded Famosa Chicken Rice Ball Restaurant off Jonker Street.

The Famosa Chicken Rice Ball restaurant even have their own website @ http://www.melaka.net/famosa/
.Chicken Rice Balls: This is how the website describe the rice balls:
All our chicken rice ball are moulded by machine. It's clean and hygenic plus the fragrant rice flavour are maintained. Every single rice ball you consume, you will get to taste the full flavour engrained in a wholesome rice ball. It's so good you can just eat it on its own

This is how Demona and Dogma describe the chicken rice balls:
Utter CRAP! The quality of rice was bad ,non-fragrant, coarse white rice that is more akin to rice for my dogs. The rice has no smell, no taste , nothing. It is like consuming a ball of starch with soya sauce. POOOI!! Each plate comes with 5 chicken rice balls and Demona and I only managed to finish up 1 each. POOOI!

Roasted Chicken: The chicken was average. It wasn't bad that you bitch about it, and it wasnt good that it is worth talking about it. PASS.
Soup: The soup is pretty tasty, and i finish the whole bowl after the frustrated rice balls and the appalling service attitude. Salty and filled with the fried shallots fragrance.
Chilli: Boring chilli, not enough kick, a tad too sourish.

Verdict: This Famosa Chicken Rice Ball restaurant is a real joke. The service was bad. The waiters are terribly impatient when it comes to taking orders and getting the bills. It is as if they just wish us to order, eat and vanish. The atrocious service just compounded our misery at Famosa Chicken Rice Ball restaurant.

Melaka Jonker Street Ice Kacang

Woohoo, this is our inaugural road trip from KL to Singapore in my lil Jazzy Wazzy. Demona suggested for us to have a short break at Melaka to catch some local delicacies.

The sun is scorching and the Melaka town centre is a good 20 minutes drive away from the highway exit. GRRRRRR,

Demona brought me to this jam packed stall at Jonker street that is famous for their Ice Kacang. The pre-war shophouse is decorated with wooden chairs and white marble tables reminiscent of the old Kopitiam in Ipoh/Penang.

The famed Ice Kacang: Splendid Gula Melaka drizzling on top of the shaved ice. The gula melaka found here is really thick, sticky and extremely fragrant. One work- SHIOKNNNNESS! This is the perfect antidote for the sweltering heat. However, the other ingredients of the ice kacang was just so so, with the typical red bean, jagung chendol etc filling up the bowl. I would still prefer Penang's Gurney road's ice kacang for its solid fillings (juicy atap chee, real pandan chendol, slow cooked chunky red beans), however, the Jonker Street's Gula Melaka is really out of this world..Probably the King of Ice Kacang would be the hybrid version of Gurneys fillings + Jonkers Gula Melaka!
Prawn Mee: Both of us shared this bowl of prawn mee from the stall beside the ice kacang. The soup was pretty tasty with good amount of prawn essence in it. However, it just lack the WOW factor. Pretty average bowl of prawn mee. PASS.
TOOT TOOT TOOT: On our way to Singapore with Demona's 150 kilo worth of cosmetic, lingerie, fans, mirrors, shoes, bags, clothes and what not. Driving for 360 km was quite a dread and I have to rest my legs at times on the dash board. Apologies to Demona who have to bear with my stinky feet

Sales dinner celebration / Demona's farewell@Ben&Nicks Diner, Subang SS15

This dinner was held in conjunction of Demona's workteam's sales dinner as well as to celebrate the last night for Demona in KL before moving down to Singapore to kickstart her new career.

2 plus years of great fun, pretty emotional and ambivalent I would say, for her to leave her colleagues of 2 years in Roche and face the daunting environment/culture. Initially, I wanted to write this post, but after giving some thought, I decided to leave this post for Demona to write on as this event had more attachment to her, put aside the food aspect.

Demona: This was the grilled salmon dish. This dish was only average. The salmon was a little over cooked thus, the meat was less juicy and it crumbled quite easily each time I forked through the meat.

Demona: Dogma and I were madly in love, head over heels over deep fried, bread crumb battered calamari rings. Honestly, we were almost always tempted to order the dish however many times we were horribly dissapointed with the dish's outcome.

Thus, we also ordered the deep fried calamari rings as our appetizers too. The calamari size was slightly larger than our local 50 cent coins, but the colour seemed too dark, as if the oil was not fresh. The rings were not too chewy and tough, showing that the cooking time was just nice. However, in terms of money for value, this dish is a big no no. If I am not wrong, there were only 5 or 6 rings in total, and the rest of the plate was covered with fries.

Demona: Aside from being seafood-ie for the night, we turned carnivorous too! I ordered a sirloin steak. Grrrrrrrrrrrr...!!! The portion was quite decent, definitely enough for one's tummy to fill up nicely. The corn could have tasted so much better if it was grilled well, and coated with some spicy sweet sauce or butter!

Demona: The medium rare sirloin which I ordered was cooked right at how we wanted it. Nicely grilled on the outside, but preserving its tender juiciness on the inside. Very, very juicy. Yummi-licious! Dogma and I happily sink in our carnivorous cavities! Grrrrrrrrrr....

Demona: It was really great to have a nice relaxing dinner with those I had worked with closely for the past two years, right from the top BU manager to the grasses (us) below, without the restrictions of the ties, collared shirts and working shoes.

The ambience was quite homely, with the jazzy music and little bulbs to dimly brighten the dining area but the BIGGEST, JUICIEST, FATTEST NO NO was to dine OUTSIDE of this tiny cozy restaurant tucked in the corner of Tiaraville condominium, next to SS15 Subang's Carrefour. The mosquitoes outside were great predators. Their main aim: suck blood, inject poison. We ended up swinging that electric fly/mosquito tennis racquet-like swatter for the whole night and yet I ended up getting more than 20 horribly itchy bulges from my thigh to my toe. The bites were so poisonous that they itched for days and left scars.

Alright, alright. Put aside the grumbling on the insect pests, I truly enjoyed chilling out with each and everyone, for the final time. My darling colleagues also bought me a gorgeous black Guess bag as a farewell present! You guys are the sweetest!

My boss, G kept on teasing Dogma on taking good care of me *AHEM* if not he would send mafias to make Dogma into 369. I found that quite hilarious. I am very happy that Dogma made an effort to be a part of this dinner event.

Village Park take 3 @ Damansara

Demona totally loves Village Park for its fragrant nasi lemak, crunchy fried chicken and the oh-so-spicy sambals that comes with it.
On her second last day in KL, Demona paid tribute to her NasiLemak Shrine, again, the fried chieken, brinjal, and sambal did not dissapoint!

Crunchy Friend Chicken: Demona took care of the meat, I take care of the bones!
Beef Rendang: Moist and ultra tender beef pieces, superb!
Binjal: One of demona's favourite vegetables. It was soso for Village Park's version.
Kick-Ass Sambal: This sambal really packs a big punch. They blend it together with some rempah, onion and probably some sugar. FIREYYY and FInger licking good!

Verdict: DIE DIE MUST GO LA! This Muslim restaurant is actually owned by a Chinese couple that really digs Kelantan-nese Malay food. Demona told me that the chef are all from Kelantan and the dishes are heavily influenced by the Kelantan style. You could see throngs of Malays, Indian, Chinese mingling around and enjoying the FANTASTIC nasi lemak.. Forget about all those self serving BN politicians who plays up the racial cards, This is Malaysia at its best,

Rong Kai's Anthony Yong Tau Fu

Sorry guys for the less than frequent updates.....We have always try to do a 1 post 1 day kind of routine but our posting rate has been severely disrupted with Demona's relocation to Singapore.
Do give her another week or two to settle in Singapore and you guys will see her posts in no time!

Back to this Yong Peng Anthony YTF, I was on the way to KL to pick up Demona and chanced upon this restaurant recommended by my aunty in Yong Peng. The restaurant is called Rong Kai and it housed the famous Anthony Fish Ball/YongTauFu. It's a typical corner lot Koptiam with 1 stall selling the YTF.
The signage inside the restaurant. The Famous Fish Cake: At RM3 per piece, this is not exactly value for money. I wasnt too excited over this fishcake. Yes, it is less plasticky than most commercial fishcake, yet nothing extra to scream about.
HorFun "DRY": MMM, i'd always like dry horfun and it is heartwarming to have a good bowl of this delicacy. I yet to find any good dry horfun stalls in Singapore. Any suggestions?
Assorted YTF: At 80cents per piece, not exactly cheap but it is pretty fresh. Without the excessive gelatin found in most commercial YTF
Chili Willi: Pretty spicy with a sourish note.

Verdict: Anthony offers some good YTF and the fish ball in particular was pretty good. Naturally chewy but not rubbery. Cant taste some good fresh fishes in it. The total bills comes to 32rm for 3 of us, including 1 drink each. Not exactly cheap and not exactly exciting. Probably i'll try some other stalls in YongPeng Town the next time I pop by.

Location: Main Street of Yong Peng, If you exit via the YongPeng (Selatan) at the North South Highway, keep looking at your left. The restaurant name is RongKai.
