Buy1Free1 chippie deal@

KL has not been kind to us, in terms of reasonable value, imported chips per se. however, on one of dogma's mindless trip around Mercato Hartamas, his eagle eye spotted the bundled packed of TIM's Jalapeno Cascade Style Potato Chips @ 14bucks for 2 packs.

Yes, it was nearing its expiry date.
Yes, it seems like noone is buying it. but quick witted Dogma managed to googled out a tons great review of this chips, rating it among the top 10 potato chips in the States.

Once opened, it releases a strong whiff of Jalapeno spiciness in the air, quickly suffocating any living beings in our small little room. It smell like someone just cut open a Jalapeno and furiously rub it against your nose tip, and i do mean, furiously..

It was spicy, and it was saltish.
It was anything but the greatest chip in the world,
but Tim's Cascade Style Jalapeno Potato Chips was a good venture away from the usuals Kettles, Ruffles and local Chipsters

Home made prawn crackers@Demona's mama

Demona: No one makes better prawn crackers than me mama's! Anyone wants to take orders? haha. Actually I rather not. The process of making these lil' crackers right from scratch really roughen her hands and makes them sore. I'm sorry guys! Best-est prawn crackers ever! and only Chuah and Chuah clan alone can have this priviledge... and of course, occasionally others who are around me when me mama makes me some. *winks* Dogma, eh? I remembered you chomping down these lil' cracker jagger goodies :)

Mommy's crackers come in two flavours, original and spicy ones. I believe I've posted on this once a long, long while ago. But, who cares :) I never get bored of telling people about how great my mom and her culinary skills are!

Painstaking queue CNY Lim Chee Guan Bak Kua@Chinatown

Demona's job often require her to be Full Time Food Getter/butler and part time Sales Person.
Her job in Singapore would require her to queue a good 4 hours during CNY to grab some sinfully greasy and meaty Bak Kua from Lim Chee Guan..
I really wonder who invented the custom of eating bakkua during CNY....
It just so weird that you have to queue 4 hours to buy exorbitantly priced bakkua during CNY when the same stuff could have been bought during normal days at half the price minus the queue...
Probably there is some truth in the old saying that. the longer the queue, the better the taste...so you gotta wait for the long queue to occur during CNY before you get the great taste of Lim Chee Guan..

This piece of meat from a dead carcass, toook Demona 4 hours, under the sweltering tropical weather, amidst throngs of Kiasu, fierce Singaporeans to get it for a doctor (her customer)...

Did Demona told you that you smuggled 100gm from every 1Kg she bought?..On company account i tell u !

HEHE..
Tasty Lim Chee Guan Bak Kua-- 4 hours of waiting time, melted cosmetic and @$40/Kg
Free Lim Chee Guan Bak Kua on company account--Pricesless

Sun Biscuits Courtesy of Mike, from Taiwan!

We had this little sunny buggers courtesy of our good friend Mike from Taiwan....It was a real pleasure and blessing meeting him first at work then at Zion Church Singapore. Hope he is doing well in Taiwan now......

Some nice packaging by the Guru of Marketing in Taiwan. The wordings says 3 low 2 high, shoudl be some extra nutritional boost in the Sun Biscuits
putting the health conscious aside, the Sun biscuit was moist in the inside and fluffy flakes on the outside. Mildly sweet and milk.... mmm mmm mmm, Demona blot out the Suns within hours after receiving it from Mike. I managed only to have 2 pieces :(

German Kirsch Chocolates

Had this after church during the fellowship session. Some kind souls brought back bunch of this deliciously looking Kirsch Chocolate from Germany.

If any of you wonder what is Kirsch, let this wiki-note kills your curiosity cat!

Kirschwasser (pronounced /KIRSH-VAHS-ər/, German for “cherry water”) is a clear, colorless fruit brandy traditionally made from double distillation of morellos, a dark-colored cultivar of the sour cherry. However, the beverage is now being made from other kinds of cherries as well.

The cherries are fermented complete (i.e., along with their stones).[1]

Ok, let us now talk about the taste...
The taste.... hmmm is not great. HAHA
The yellowish thing taste like grated coconut starch, while the dark stuff are just dark chocolates (DUH!)...and it has a tinge of sweet liquor taste from the kirsch..

Overall, not something that Alcohol loving Dogma crave very much about nor was it sinfully exciting enough for chocoholic Demona to gobble down after church service.

Verdict: A good exposure for these 2 poor Malaysian, who never travelled to Germany (ok, Dogma spend a day at Cologne/Bohn before) on Kirsh Chocolate.

Pringles Extreme Screamin Dill Pickle

popped this lil green monster over our usual movie marathon.
Sourish, salty, with prickly tinge on the palate.
Not exactly to my liking as i'm pretty hooked to Kettles Honey DIjon.
The pringles cuts are more of a pre-mixed mashed potatoes molded into chips shape. Not exactly natural when biting into it.

Chipster Potato Chips Sour Cream Onion

Tough times calls for a budget cut in snacks expenditure. Our in-house CFO, Demona has vastly changed her grocery list since the economy climate turned gloomy. Off were the expensive but yummy Kettle's, Doritos, etc and In are the local made, Chipster Potato Chips.

Previously we tried the spicy flavour and it is indeed packing a hell of a spiced up flavour. The Sour Cream & Onion flavour did well as well. However, the chips were a tad crunchy for my liking thou, if i need to pick a few bones about it.

Chippie Chips@Made in China

Demona: Recently, I went on a business trip to Hanzhou, China, which was also my first trip to the country itself. Foodventura-ing in Hanzhou wasn't much to my liking. It was a 10 course super duper trooper oily meal every breakfast, lunch and dinner... even supper! I wondered if the locals drink oil rather than water for survival. By looking at their infamous dish, Tong Puo Rou, you could feel your cholesterol level shoots right up the roof. What was equally unpleasant was the terrible air condition over there, you could really feel your breathing capacity greatly constrained.

Being a courteous girl like myself *ahem*, I bought some funky looking, flavoured chips produced locally in China home for Dogma as gifts and also for our food venture sessions (I bought these also because there weren't much that were interesting enough to bring back home)

Demona: I bought these small lil' packs of locally made chips with some really funky flavours eg: stewed mutton, curry beef, barbequed pork for about an SGD dollar each.

Demona: The chips were average. They were quite crunchy but some flavours didn't taste like what they were supposed to be. None stood out from the rest, thus we had no breadwinner from the family. However, for the price of only a dollar, we have no rights to criticise further.

Demona: At the Shanghai airport itself, I saw this funky D2 Doritos mini pack, SGD 1. The content was a little dubious as the description of the taste wasn't written. Nevertheless, the marketing team for this product definitely deserved a fat bonus from Doritos, because despite not knowing what exactly was the flavour itself I still bought it anyway because the packaging was just.. sooooooo cool looking.

Demona: Even this pack caught Dogma's eyes. We came to a conclusion that D2 just meant that the flavour of the nachos were twice as strong. In this case, peppery and cheesy. They weren't too bad... slurps!

Demona: This flavour caught my eye too! Lays Cucumber:Natural and COOOOOOL. At first I wondered why the name was given in such a way. Until I finally tasted one, then I knew. In some wierd way, the chips gave a menthol after taste. And definitely, a very cucumber-y feel. Sorta makes you feel like you've just swallowed a icey cold facial mask. I must say, it was an acquired taste. It wasn't Dogma's cup of tea. I finished most of it anyway :) SGD 2.50

Verdict: Maybe if I had stayed long enough there, I'll start to enjoy these locally flavoured chips.. but for now, Dogma and I are still sticking strong to our Kettles, Mister Potatoes, Ruffles, Lays, Calbee with familiar flavours. Anyway, this is what Dogma and I truly enjoy doing. Discovering new places, new tastes, new experience. In this case, it was chippie chips!

o'Zack Four Cheese Chips

We bought this from the Junction 8 NTUC Jap food section. Amazing pungent 4 cheese smell once opened. THe chips are tad thin and not packing much bite but the smell is gorgeous/smelly socks depending how much do you like cheese. I find it pretty enjoyable but Demona aim for the nearest fire exit when i opened it up.
Thin potato chips. Wish it had packed a crunchier bite to it.

Breakfast and Pastries

Another brief recollection of a tasty snacks we had courtesy of Aileen.
Aileen has bought us some tasty Ritz Apple strudels and these gems were tasty!!!
Light, flaky with just amount of sweetness, the strudels makes excellent tea time!

Check out the glistening Straberry Strudels! Sweet with a slight sourish berry tang! slurrrrp!

The original Apple Strudel. Good apple custard taste, and not too sweet. we bothlike it!
Close up inspection on the apple fillings.

Snap shot of the Coffee Bean brek o meal. At around 7SGD inclusive of refillable coffee/tea, this is quite a steal in city area! It comes complete with scramble eggs, 2 sausages, salad with raspberry bits and cherry tomatoes, and bread.

Pastries from Provence: Another gem that capture Demona's heart. No girls can ever resist a hearty chocolate coated pastry. Light flaky pastry with rich bitter sweet chocolate. OOO LALALAL

Chitato Snacks from Indonesia

We bought this from our trip to Bali at the airport just before we took our flight back to KL. It was shocking to see that prices escalate more than 3X between the shops inside/outside the airport. and it appears the shops furthest away from the airport entrance is the cheapest among the lot.

Back to the Chitato Supreme cheese flavour potato chips@9000 rupiah. The taste is too starchy and lacking in any real cheese taste. infact, it was too starchy we found it hard to finish the small pack between 2 of us.

Yuck...

Yidu Pork Flavoured Ramen given to taste

Demona: This humble looking animated pack of ramen is a symbol of a stepping stone for foodventuras.blogspot.com. Although, the reward came in small packages, we were truly happy to hear that we were also selected by this distributor for some ramen trial tasting.

This was our first free food tasting. Amateurs we were, compared to the big boy floggers constantly invited for free fine food tastings. However, the arrival of Mr. Ramen really made us felt proud, like a parent watching his first born taking his first step or learning his first word.

Thank you, Mr Ramen distributor!

Demona: Several compact looking sachets were found inside the noodle pack. The salty porky smell was released once I pressed these slurpy juices out of their plastic packs. Oooooh lah lah!

Demona: I made a blunder out of our first free meal! This ramen is PURELY soup based. Myself, being a 'hero' (or lazy, to be exact), attempted altering its purpose, and wanted to make it 'dry' / kwon lou in chinese. Thus, after cooking the noodles in hot boiling water, I drained them dry and stirred them with the sauces. The noodles started turning very sticky, and they felt really starchy when I ate them. Not to mention, overly salty too.

I quickly confessed to Dogma that it was actually soup based. He started grumbling, shaking his head and 'tsk'-ing all way through saying that I ruined our first free food. I acted fast, grabbed hold of a pot of warm water and poured it on the noodles, trying to salvage what I could. The soup was creamy white in colour, in fact it tasted really delicious! The oink oink taste in the soup was quite apparent. The noodles had an oriental spaghetti-like feel to it.

A packet comes in two portions. Needless to say, we were bloated with this wriggly deliciousness in our tummies! I must say, this is one interesting instant ramen. It has its own signature qualities compared to many other instant ramens around.

I'm not sure on its availability in the stores as I don't think I've ever came across it. Anyone out there ever seen this on the shelf of any store?

Thai Lay's Chips

While waiting for the bus to go back to Taiping, Demona and I shopped around the sleazy Golden Mile complex and got our self a few packs of Thai Lay's chipsVienna Barbecue + Hot Sauce: Some slight tang on the palate. Nothing spectacular. The chips felt abit starchy..
Thai Chilli Paste: Again, the chips is a tad starchy compared to the normal lays you get locally. More intense spicy note..but nothing to shout about.

Misc Snacks: Terra Chips Stripes and Blue

It's Super Saver's Time at Cold Storage again!
For this few weeks, Cold Storage will be having a good discount for the premium Terra Chips. Costing now at $4.60, its a 29% discount from the usual selling price.

Demona choose the Stripes and Blues chips seasoned with Seasalt as post dinner snacks over a tiring and stressful weekdays ( sales not coming in for both of us,, what to do, what can we do.. Pray!)
The stripe and blues is named after the American flag with The red chips made from sweet potatoes, the blue chips are made from blue potatoes, and the striped chips are striped beets.

However, we were pretty dissapointed with the chips as the package is flatter than usual and the chips tasted flat and lacking freshness. Secondly, over 75%of the content are blue potato chips. WHERE are the RED AND STRIPES! GRRRRR

Provence Hot Dog bun with Mayo Egg:
Simple bun but went very well with the mayo topping. Excellent!

Misc Chocolate: Demona wipe these Korean chocolate clean after Sunday Church Service.......

Air Asia Combo Meal

Demona: We were bored to death 30000 feet up in the air. It was painful enduring 3 hours of cramming into small spaced seats, a crazy lady behind who kicked my seat the whole way through, and seats that could no longer recline further than 10 degrees (in the name of saving cost). Neither of us could hardly catch a wink. To cheer ourselves up, we decided to burn a little hole on our pockets and tummies, thus we ordered food from the cabin crew. Needless to say, we chose the combo meal, comprising the INFAMOUS Air Asia nasi lemak and a hot cup of green tea (just a sachet dipped in hot water, cost RM 1). Total damage: RM 10.00.

Demona: The Nasi Lemak was just average. But we did agree that, if the flights were long duration ones, people would still rather have average/slightly lousier food than starve to death high up in the air.

Demona: BTW, can anyone spot the difference between the picture and the food? Something is missing! Tell me now what you've noticed!!!!

Assorted Indonesia Snacks

Some brief write ups on the snacks that we enjoyed in Bali.Demona swear by the goodiness of Mcdonald's McFlurry: Whenever she felt down, sad, uneasy etc, just pop by a McD stall and grab a McFlurry and you are certain that the sun will shine again. This is the chocolate Mcflurry that we had. Besides this, we also have a Mcflurry Warna Warni (literally means Colourful McFlurry). It is actually Mcflurry with MnM's chocolate. Each cup cost less than 1 dollar sgd, albeit at a smaller cup. A great enjoyment eating by the beach in the sunny afternoon.

Local Lay's Chips, Nori Seaweed Flavour: This 180grams pack cost about RP9,000 which is about 1.50 sgd while the imported Lay's chip cost about RP60,000. One might wonder is there a huge difference between Indon made Lay's chips and a US made Lay's Chip.To be frank, there is indeed some really minor difference in terms of taste. ( the Indon chips aint as light and crispy as the original lays and lean more towards the quality of Twisties Chitos, Calbee etc. And the indon version is only availble in Salmon flavour, seaweed flavour or spicy bbq flavour which is not available internationaly). However, at 1.50sgd per pop, this is dirt cheap and worth every penny of it! Demona and I sapu at least 9 packs to be brought home to Singapore.
Chitato Chips, Beef BBQ@RP6,000: Again, another dirt cheap local chips costing less than a dollar sgd. Taste wise, coudl not comment much except some spices, bbq flavour and typical saltish note. Not exciting but did the job of quenching our thirst for chips. Cheap!

Qtela Cassava Chips: I'm not sure what Cassave is but this is pretty yummy. The chips is much more starchier/solid compared to potato chips and in a way, it makes u feel healthier and it tasted less salty. We have one more pack in our cupboard now waiting for further test during our next movie marathon!
