Parker Estate Tasting@ Wine Gallery

Here is a brief notes on my recent tasting in Wine Gallery@Chang Charn Rd.

The wines today are from Parker Coonawarra Estate.

Terra Rossa Merlot 2001
A pretty good nose of leather and cedar supported by cassis and minimal pencil lead. However, palate was a tad "watery" and did not have enough body and acid to last. Tannin was rounded. An average effort overall.

Favourite Son Wrattonbully Cabernet Merlot 2005
Disjointed without much harmony. Minor tobacco and much berry on the nose. tannins was harsh for Parker's standard. Hints of vanila, mocha and chocolate. I wasn't impressed.

Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
Good acid and fruit with cutting mid palate. Nose of leather, vanila, chocolate and dark currant. .Some cassis. Finish was medium. More approachable now compared to the first growth Terra Rossa. Lacking in elegance and complexity. Do not think i'll revisit this soon.

Terra Rossa First Growth Cabernet Merlot 2001
I was very much impressed with Terra Rossa First Growth 1998. It was juicy, chewy, with cutting mid palate and mineral that won over many of us during the decadent tasting of Le fruits de la vigne. However, the 2001 was not up to my expectation. Sure, it has more body and weight compared to the normal Terra Rossa, and you could taste substantial acid indicating long life ahead of it. However, it is still not coming together now in my opinion and lacking in much elegance and wow factor. Probably it needs much more time to integrate the acids and shed some of its fruit to reveal more tertiary flavour. I have a bottle in my cellar and i'll revisit them 5 years down the road.

wines at Ed's

It was a lazy Sunday evening and Ed/S had organized an impromptu wine session . S prepared some fresh mussels in chive butter sauce, fresh Ciabatta from The Cellar door and cheese to go with our wines.
Fresh juicy mussels.
Cims de Porrera 1997: WOW, an amazing nose of leather and tobacca with excellent mineral tone. Moderate weight in body however, it was very harmonious and smooth. elegant. Dark chocolate and cheery in the mid palate and nose. Beautiful. Love to get hold of one of this soon. I had the 1999 last month and it was in much a primary state still. You need time for Cims de Porerra!

Le Haut Lieu Vouvray 1997: A very refreshing white with excellent minerals. Nose was complex with minor butter, citrus, lemon and good loads of minerals. Finish is long and the palate turn a tad honey at the end palate after much aerating. Good effort!

Seoul Yummy@Novena Square 2

Demona: Having only 45 minutes left, we quickly browsed around the eateries to have a quick late lunch bite before I leave back to KL. Dogma was craving for something "Anyong Ha Seyoh", and Seoul Yummy caught our eyes. It is a casual dining korean restarant, with a see-through glass kitchen filled with tall white hat chefs busily cooking away. The waitresses were in cute Korean costumes, and a few of them were real Koreans as well. The restaurant was packed with customers, and its noise level was quite high. This place is suitable for a quick sit-eat-pay-leave meal.

Demona: A small bowl of Kimchi as an appetizer. (SGD 1.00). Both of us wiped it clean within 2 mouthfuls. TAK PUAS! Need.. more.. kimchi.. slurps.

Demona: My tongue is typically Malaysian. I need chilli, I need spice. That will make everything nice! This was the "SPICIEST" chilli that they can offer. It was more sweet than spicy. Oh well.. better than nothing. I couldn't not complain any more than this.

Demona: We shared a bowl of stir fried glass noodles with seafood and beef slices. (SGD 7.80) The glass noodles were a major letdown. The beef slices were pretty tender, and flavourful and this was the only worthy bit in the whole dish. The noodles were clumpy, sticky, agglutinating to each other. Despite its brownish colour, it was actually quite bland. The sweet chilli which we request became our SUPERHERO.

Demona: We ordered a plate of kimchi dumplings as well. (SGD 4.80) There were 4 pieces in one portion. The taste was strangely similar to our local "Chai Kueh" (Vegetable Cakes),which is made from gluten free flour, wrapping turnips and carrots stir fried with dried prawns/garlic.

The only difference was that the dumplings were pan fried rather than steamed like Chai Kuehs. I did not feel any Anyong-ness in this dish.

Demona: The bill came up to SGD 17.40. We were left unimpressed after the meal. The food which we tried did not make us yearn for another trip back here. I strongly doubt we will visit this place again in the near future. Unless, we have missed out something great from Seoul Yummy. Anyone out there knows if there is any worth trying?

Sinful sugary treat@Obolo

Demona: Obolo is quietly located along Joo Chiat road, this cute cozy little store offers more than what it seems from outside. It is pretty tough to actually walk past the shop without noticing it because of the giant poster cut-out of the famous plump food critic/ actor placed outside its door.

I logged on to their website and read up about them. Obolo's profile seems to have a character of its own. The owners of Obolo were architecture graduates who have fiery passion towards baking. They started off baking for friends and families, and the start of this interesting adventure began.

Demona: Obolo had a promotion where by the price was quoted about SGD 2.00 cheaper with the purchase of 2 desserts from the glass range. We decided to be KIA SU and chose the promotion deal. Our first glass dessert was the Verrine Foret Noire

The VRN consists of dark chocolate ganache mousse, kirsh soaked dark cherries, dark cherries compote and ivoire mousse with vanilla beans. (Price of one is SGD 7.20)

Demona: The next glass dessert was the Verrine Rhumba

The VR consists of banana chocolate creme, rum-soaked raisins, vanilla bean mascarpone creme, chocoalate genoise soaked in rum and topped with Valhorna crunchy chocolate pearl (Price of one is SGD 7.20)

Demona: This was the full length view of both desserts. Layers and layers of smoooooooth, chocolatey mousse. Ooooh lah lah!

I must say.. every dessert made in Obolo had a touch of grace, culture, beauty, elegance, sexy, glamorous. Gorgeous in taste, in looks, in style.

Demona: Lovely bite size pieces of thin dark chocolate layers, chocolate flakes, and the crunchy Valhorna chocolate pearls coated with gold dust. Slurps! The smooth, creamy chilled mousse went along so, so, so well with the crunchy chocolate toppings. The Valhorna pearls were the best bits offered by Verrine Rhumba. Oh yeah! Not forgetting the rum layer, its taste was fairly strong. My face felt a little flushed after a few spoonfuls.

The kirsh soaked dark cherries compressed in between the creamy mousse layers were excellent complements to the chocolate heavenly Verrine Foret Noire.

Comparing both, I much preferred the Verrine Rhumba because of its gold dusted chocolate pearls and the rum in it.

Demona: The bill came up to SGD 15.70, including in a long black coffee. The desserts were a class of their own. Delicious.. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm ! We were slightly overdosed from the sugar sweet cocoa-ness. Dogma and I will come back again to try out their cheesecakes range next time!

home cook@clementi

just a brief notes on some home cook food with demona at Clementi.
Bonne Mama Raspberry Jam: This is one of my favourite French jam. You could see chunks of raspberry in this not overly sweetened jam. i like.

Kalles Creamed Smoked Roe spread@5sgd: Saltish and tangy with a fishy bite. Not bad.
Ikea Dark Rye Crisp with Bonne Mama Raspberry jam: Healthy dry rye crisp...
NV Moingeon Brut 1415 Blanc de Blanc: A burgundian method traditional sparkling. It was very pleasing. Citrus on the nose with minor brioche. After much airing it was pretty typical chardonay like. Pleasing clean with some dry finish. good value.
