Awfully Chocolate@Katong Mall

Demona: Awfully Chocolate was born into Merlion land in 1998. I've been hearing stories about the wonders of AC's chocolate cakes from Dogma, which made my mind salivating for a long, long while already. After a savoury treat at Emperor Soup, we walked around Joo Chiat area and stumbled upon an AC branch here. Although we were all quite full, we talked it over and decided, "Ah.. what the heck, we don't always come across AC anyway, let's just indulge for tonight."

Demona: AC's primary theme is : Truth is in its great taste. Its cakes are not decorated or displayed on the counter. It boasts on the usage of high quality ingredients and taste rather than its outer appearance. Thus, we were given 3 choices without any sight of the cake. Either chocolate, chocolate banana, or chocolate rum and raisins. Aileen, Ann and I (the babes) decided on selection no.3.

The pict above was the overall looks of the cake. One cake cost SGD 25. A moderate sized cake with a minimalist decoration concept. Even the shop itself followed along with the concept. White walls, white counter, white uniformed waitresses, white chairs and tall round tables (only 3 sets in total).

They would not even slice the cake for you beforehand. Apparently, "HYGIENE" was their reason. We were given a plastic knife and everything was basically, DIY.

Demona: The sweetness of the chocolate cream was well controlled, due to the usage of bittersweet chocolate I guess. The sponge chocolate layers were very moist, soaked with hints of rum and chewy raisins. There were about 6 layers of cream and cake inside.

Both cream and cake combined together very well. Each spoonful was a melting moment. I wouldn't say it was the best chocolate cake that I had ever tasted, but it was definitely above an average one. SGD 25 for a whole cake is pretty fairly priced I think.

There were 6 of us sitting on the white coloured high chairs. Our presence there definitely drew the crowd's attention. While we were devouring away this chocolatey goodness, people from afar were watching us, probably curious, salivating, and decided the same too.. " What the heck.. let's just order one too!"

Verdict: A good cake. Simple concept, but much more worthy than many cakes that I had tasted. For RM 25, you definitely can't even get a decent cake even if it was the simplest sponge cake of 'em all.
