Thirsty Thursday

Again, another wonderful Thirsty Thursday with the gang. SH has provided a good spread of cheese, grilled chicken, sashimi, sushi and crackers.

Assorted cheese with grapes: decent.

Vasse Felix Heyyesbury 1999@110sgd: WOTN. Intense pencil shavings and medicinal, supported by good leather and tobacco. This thing is elegant, with elegant tannins to flow smoothly into your throat. If you buy this and do not like this, drop me an email and I will get this from you.

Wynn John Riddoch Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon limited release 1997@170SGD: Juicy big but opened up after 30min in the glass with some medicinal and herbal tone. Initial note is too juicy and big but pretty ok after 30min decanting. For the price, get the Vasse Felix
Caymus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1985, napa Valley: This is the famed cult wine from napa valley. Price tag is scary but it was tight and subdued after being opened. Nose was getting more medicinal after 45 min in the decanter. Slight pencil detected. Probably over the top. Get the vasse felix and keep for 8 years.

Le Petit Cheval St emillion Grand Cru 2001: The second label of the famed Cheval Blanc. This is retailing at about 199SGD. Even after 1 hr of decanting , this is still too tight and young. We are committing infanticide. Could not detect much on the nose except subtle herbal. The palate was smooth but tight. No obvious tannins. needs another 5 years?

Alpha Domus The Aviator, Hawkes Bay. 2002@75SGD: The surprise package of the night. The cheapest wine but with the greatest value for money. Good herbal, medicinal note similar to Vasse Felix but less refined and intense. Good length. Mouth is a tad juicier but it could only be better few years down the road. buy this and Vasse felix

Grand Marnier Centernair 100 years old@300sgd: Amazing. This liquid is 100 years old and it is honeyed in colour. Beautiful. Forget about the lower end grand marnier you had tasted. This is the bomb (probably except the 150 years old). Subtle Orange dominating, with no obvious killing alcohol. This is made froma blend of cognacs/fine champagne distilled iwth essence wild tropical orange. Sip some and let it evaporate on your tongue, you could taste teh secondary herbal and orange note on your tongue. Outstanding!!!

Fiji Mineral water to go with the wine today. Cost 5 bucks per bottle. Expensive stuff. It was advertised that 0 human involved in bottling the water, so no pollution or watsoever, but heck, taste like tap water to me.
