Denise Session@Thomson

A good pal from Denise invited me over for a tasting session today.

The wine tasted today are:

Heartlands Directors Cut Shiraz 2005@SGD55
Too juicy, fat, excessively gummy fruits. A huge volley of currant fruits hitting me. Palate was simple with mainly berry and currant. urgh.

Pandalowie Shiraz 2004@SGD50plus
nice nose of currant, vanila and mocha. Palate with considerable blackcurrant but surprisingly smooth tannins. Distinctively new world but a refreshing elegance about it. No wonder this wine was sold out at Denise.

Antiyal Red 2004@SGD77 (Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.)
A blend from Chile. Big, oaky, leather nose. Interesting. Very similar with Coyam 2004 but with more elegance, restrained power and much less rough alcohol heat. Length is medium long. Good effort but not exactly cool for SGD77.

Comde De Valdemar Gran Reserva 1996
Pungent medicinal/herbicious nose with good vanilla. this is Substance! Velvety finish with fine grained mids. Soft earthy tannins and this could cellar for another 5 years minimum. A very nice wine that opens up after 4 hours of decanting. Amazing value of SGD40 5 years ago.

Vallformosa Gran Reserva 1998 (Tempranilllo 80% Cab Sav 20%, Penedes, Spain)
A less heavy herbicious nose with mocha backbone compared to Comde de Valdemar. Some oak/vanila as well. Body was medium and lighter than Valdemar. Soft smooth earthy tannins and really evolve in the glass with more herbal/vanilla sweetness as time passes on. Ultimately eclipsing the Comde De Valdemar . WOTN for me!
